Reimagining Our Future

A note to our friends and community partners.

Watching the Plantory sit almost empty for three months has been difficult. We miss our members and the collaboration that happens in this space. We miss our potlucks and events. And while we had hoped that we would be able to resume business as usual this summer, we are realizing the future will not look like the past. Like many of your organizations, we have experienced financial loss in recent weeks. Without the revenue of events and meeting space usage, we worry about our financial future in our current space. Additionally, the cost to continuously clean the large space on West Sixth Street, to the standards that we believe our members and the community deserves, places a financial hardship on our organization.

The Plantory’s Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to relocate the Plantory. Beginning July 1, 2020, we will be downsizing for the 2020-21 fiscal year and focusing on our vibrant, Get On Board and AmeriCorps VISTA Programs, while reimagining the future of coworking and collaboration with other community partners. We also plan to continue to offer trainings and support to local nonprofit organizations.

While I am sad to see this chapter close, I am optimistic about the future of the Plantory and look forward to future collaborations. I started my consulting business in the original Plantory location on East Third Street almost ten years ago and have watched this organization grow and evolve, helping many Central Kentucky nonprofits and social enterprises through the years. I often tell my clients “you cannot give the shirt off your back, if you do not have a shirt to give.” We know that many of the organizations that we support are also facing hardships and we recognize that overextending our organization to remain in this space, diminishes our capacity to help others.

Thank you for your support!

Stephanie Aschmann Spires

Interim Director, The Plantory

PS- While downsizing our space, we are still growing! We are exciting to have a large AmeriCorps VISTA cohort starting in a few weeks as we have seen an increase need for VISTAS in our community during the Covid-19 Pandemic. If your organization would like to learn more about the VISTA program, please contact
